WHAT IS DNA DAY

DNA Day is a National annual event on April 25th organized by the National Human Genome Research Institute to commemorate the discovery of the double helix and the completion of the Human Genome Project. DNA Day at PSU is one of many growing chapters across the nation and the second chapter to be established in Pennsylvania!

As a science outreach program, our mission is to break down barriers to science and bridge the gap between research institutions and the public by fostering young people's interest in science. To accomplish this goal, DNA Day at PSU has partnered with Pennsylvania high schools with an emphasis on underserved communities that have limited opportunities for science outreach and exposure. Our Penn State chapter pairs scientists with local high school classrooms to present interactive module lessons and interactive activities to teach students about DNA, the latest advances in Genetics and Genomic research and technology, and exciting career paths. This program also gives high school students the unique opportunity to interact with early-career scientists and break down misconceptions about who scientists are and how we carry out our own original research, thereby demystifying the careers of scientists and expanding career options many high school students have not previously considered.

DNA DAY at PSU OBJECTIVES

  • Cultivate a sense curiosity and interest in biology and biomedical sciences.

  • Educate Pennsylvania's high school students about contemporary advances in genetics and genomics and how it impacts their lives.

  • Connect students to early careers scientists in order to expand their career path options which many students have not previously considered.

  • Engage scientists with their communities and encourage mentorship and participation in community service through science outreach in our local public schools.

  • Build relationships between major research entities in our state and local public schools.
