MODULES

Genomics & Inheritance

Students will learn the ins and outs of the human genome – what makes us each unique and how traits are inherited.

Evolutionary Biology

Students will learn about the genetic forces behind evolution and how this leads to biodiversity. This module specifically highlights mutations, which accumulate in the DNA and have the potential to create new species after enough changes have occurerd. They will also learn about natural selection and other evolutionary forces at work that explain the diversity of organisms on Earth.

Forensics

Students will learn how forensic scientists analyze DNA in order to link a DNA sample to a particular individual. Students will learn about powerful molecular biology techniques such as PCR, restriction digests, and gel electrophoresis.

Symbiosis & The Microbiome

Students will learn about how living things are actually collections of organisms that include symbiotic microbes! This module outlines different types of symbiotic relationships and some important functions of the human microbiome. Students learn how biologists study the microbiome by examining DNA.

Microbiology & Immunology

Students will learn basic concepts in microbiology and immunology, including the difference between bacteria and viruses, and why treatments (such as antibiotics) work on one type of microbes, but not the other. Students will also learn about the immune system and be able to explain how vaccines work.

Pharmacogenomics

Students will learn about the concept of “personalized” medicine, like how differences in our genes affect whether a drug treatment will be successful or have serious side effects, and how we can use this information to customize treatments for individual patients.

LAB TOURS AT PENN STATE

STRAWBERRY DNA EXTRACTION ACTIVITY

In this activity, students will extract and visualize DNA from Strawberries. We use strawberries because they are Octopoloid, meaning they have eight copies of every chromosome (so they have a lot of DNA)!
